County Galway

Galway is by far my favorite county in Ireland. Its not just because it is where I lived when I studied abroad in college, but it also is one of the prettiest counties with deep cultural and historical ties. You will find here one of the main Gaeltachts in Connemara where the locals are still very in touch with their heritage and some even speaking Irish as there first language still at home. In Connemara you can also take in all of the region’s beauty at its national park while also visiting Kylemore Abbey or seeing Ashford Castle. Galway city makes the perfect home base to see Connemara and other sites of the Irish west coast. You can take the bus to Rossaveel to take a ferry to one of the three islands that make up the Aran Islands. Inishmore is the largest and the most visited, but that doesn’t mean you should sleep on the other islands! There are many other small towns to visit in Galway like Athenry and Gort as well as many castles that you will just come across on your journey like Dungaire Castle in Kinvara. Not only is there so much to see in Galway but you can also take day trips to County Clare to visit the Cliffs of Moher and Aillwee cave. It is the perfect county for those looking to experience Ireland’s heritage and natural beauty.
