Germany

“Aller Anfang ist schwer.”

All beginnings are hard

– German Proverb

While I never lived in Germany, I think of this country the way I do about those I have, since I have visited it four times. From my experience with exchange students to visiting them in their native land, I have learned so much about the warm culture of Germany. The thing I love most about my travels throughout Germany, is how I got to see and experience the smaller towns as well as the cities. Take a look at my adventures that I hope inspire you to see the hidden gems of Germany.

The Black Forest: A Day Trip to Freiburg

Fairytale forests and fruit chocolate cakes. Great rolling hills and grandfather clocks. I love talking about the different regions of Germany because we have an idea of what is Germany but we don’t know why. Yes pretzels are German, but that is Bavaria and so is Oktoberfest. Yes there are remnants of the Cold War,…

How I Traveled To Germany Alone at 17

One of my favorite travel stories is the one that shaped me the most as not only a traveler but as a person. That is when I traveled to Germany (flying alone for the first time) at 17 years old. For some that doesn’t sound so absurd. Many kids fly alone. And then there are…

A Stop in Dresden: A Destroyed City Rebuilt and Redefined

There’s a place in Eastern Germany where you can step back in time. Here you will find palaces, baroque arches, and grand cathedrals. Its not a big city, but it isn’t a small town either. The people rush by yet everything seems to stand still. It is the capital of the land that the Saxons…

What to See and Do In Stuttgart: The Capital of Baden-Würrtemberg

Stuttgart is one of my favorite cities in Germany, which is probably an odd choice for a favorite when cities like Berlin, Munich, and Cologne exist. I think there is a simple reason for this. I have always been drawn to smaller cities. I prefer Ghent to Brussels, Galway to Dublin, and Palma to Barcelona.…

What to Eat in the German State of Baden-Württemberg

Have you ever heard of Swabian food? As Americans we have some idea of typical German food like potato salad, schnitzel, spaetzle, and pretzels, but each of these foods are unique to a particular region of Germany. You might have seen my post on what to eat in Hesse, which will be very similar to…

Visiting Neuschwanstein: A Dream into Reality

I am starting to realize I talk a lot of Germany, which is odd because I never lived there like some of the other places I have been. I think its because it holds a special place in my heart as the first country I visited, the first country I flew to alone, and the…
